May the odds be ever in favor of cupcakes

Mockingjay, the last book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, is out today (Disclosure: I work at Scholastic)! This is cause for celebration. And all celebrations deserve a good dessert.

The Hunger Games Cupcake

I would talk about baking this, except that it is made from a box of red velvet cake mix and a tub of store-bought frosting. The red-velvet was originally supposed to go with the cheesecake ice cream, but that idea was scrapped when the ice-cream turned out to be one of those tributes that don’t even make it out of the original battle at the Cornucopia.

Red velvet cake would survive the Cornucopia. Red velvet cake is a dangerous looking dessert. It’s violent and can hold it’s own in a fight. It’s not cheery stop-sign, fire-truck, maraschino cheery red. Red velvet is the blood-soaked ground in CSI: Candyland (in this week’s episode the team investigates the mysterious California Gurl killers, who leave no evidence other than a trail of bad earworms wherever they strike).

Red velvet blood splatter
If that’s not dessert blood splatter, I don’t know what is.

And if that hasn’t put you off red velvet cake forever, enjoy your cupcake and some pictures from the midnight party at Books of Wonder with Suzanne Collins herself:

NOTE: I am not done with the book. Don’t comment with spoilers.
